Hydro Tasmania Consulting has been awarded a contract to supply and construct a suite of six mini hydro plants for Melbourne Water.

Hydro Tasmania Consulting General Manger, Michael Brewster, said the $25 million contract was a significant win for the business.  Innovative Tasmanian engineering firm, Tyco Tamar, based at Exeter, will supply the mechanical, electrical and control equipment for the project.

"This project will showcase true Tasmanian innovation and excellence," Mr Brewster said.

"Hydro Tasmania Consulting can access an enviable reange of expertise in the development of renewable energy projects such as this one.

"We have completed the detailed design stage of the project.  Stage two is the supply and construction stage, which will include the supply of major equipment, and the construction and commissioning of the six plants.

"This will result in a generation capacity of seven megawatts overall for the six sites, producing some 40-gigawatthours annually, which is equivalent to the electricity for around 5 000 homes and will reduce up to 52 400 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

"The project win follows a successful mini hydro development we did for SA Water in 2003 and two mini hydro developments in Tasmania on the Mersey Forth River and at Butlers Gorge."

Melbourne firm Geotechnical Engineering will undertake the civil works.

The mini hydro developments will be built at Preston, Olinda, Mt View, Upper Yarra, Notting Hill and Silvan Reserviours.
