Rotating electrical machines
The Rotating Electrical Machines (REM) team of consultants combine design and analytical expertise to provide a state-of-the-art consultancy service covering virtually all aspects of generator control, construction, maintenance and operation. Specialising in hydro generators, the specific focus is on primary generating equipment including excitation systems, governors, alternators and synchronisers.
Combined with practical specification, design, installation and commissioning skills, REM also specialises in generator and control system modelling. Our consultants have an in-depth knowledge of the National Electricity Code (NEC) as well as market and network connection issues such as ancillary service capabilities and generator performance standards.
Our REM capabilities include established conceptual design, detailed design, installation supervision and commissioning experience covering:
- excitation systems/governor systems/synchronisers
- preparation of technical specifications for the purchase of new and replacement alternators
- management of technical portions of supply contracts including visual inspections and factory acceptance testing
- generator condition assessments
- generator testing for performance and code compliance assessment as well as model development
- tuning of AVR, governor and PSS control systems via simulation and analysis based on IEEE and IEC standards
- demonstrated experience with remote data logging systems and use of software such as LabView for managing data acquisition and retrieval
- understanding of reliability centred maintenance (RCM) and associated software
- detailed understanding of power station automation and remote control requirements.
