Hydrology and system studies
In hydro-electric generating systems the problem of determining how to make best use of the available water resource is complex. Estimating system capability, planning system augmentations and valuing water inventory is addressed using complex analytical techniques and computer models. The Systems Studies Group was formed to provide extensive experience in the development and maintenance of such complex computer models.
Our engineers and scientists take advantage of powerful computer hardware, specialised software for graphical and statistical analysis and modern computer programming techniques.
Over the years we have developed numerous models for a variety of applications, ranging from water resources to financial optimisation, spanning solution techniques from pure simulation programs to those utilising complex optimisation methodologies. Our Systems Studies professionals also provide general advice and assistance in statistical analysis, with particular specialisation in the area of synthetic data generation techniques.
Our analytical tools have been used in the areas of:
- hydrological modeling
- environmental hydrology
- optimisation of hydro-plant operations
- system capability calculations and calculation of firm and non-firm ratings
- determination of the value of water in storage and calculation of marginal supply costs
- planning generating system augmentations and expansions
- projections of supply adequacy and risk of supply shortfall
- scheduling plant outages for maintenance
- cost/benefit analysis of proposed system changes
- cost analysis of imposed operating constraints
- inventory projections
- simulation of electricity market behaviour and evaluation of bidding strategies
- transmission line and inter-connector studies
- demand forecasting
- tidal generation studies.
Surveys and GIS
Hydro Tasmania Consulting's multidisciplinary surveying potential, originating from an extensive capital works program, is considered one of the most versatile and resourceful within Australia. We are equipped with modern, centimetre-accurate RTK GPS receivers, precision theodolites, total stations, echo sounders, marine craft in survey and targetless laser systems.
Our skills and infrastructure encompass a broad range of survey disciplines, including:
- cadastral surveying
- easement/wayleave determination
- precision engineering surveying
- hydrographic surveying
- deformation monitoring
- GPS (RTK) measurements
- geodetic surveying.
Civil Engineering
Hydro Tasmania Consulting provides civil engineering consultancy and design services in the form of analysis, risk assessment, and pre-feasibility, feasibility and detailed design of projects which involve the disciplines of hydraulics, geomechanics, structural engineering, materials engineering and economics.
Such projects include:
- hydropower schemes and other renewable energy schemes, e.g. small hydro and wind
- dam design, dam upgrade design, dam safety and dam risk assessment
- tunnels, pipelines and structures, e.g. power stations, sub-stations, bridges
- transmission towers
- structural analysis, design and refurbishment
- geotechnical analysis and design
- hydraulic analysis and design
- preparation of specifications and tender documents, tender analysis and awarding of contracts, and contract supervision and administration.
