Our expertise in dam engineering is the product of Hydro Tasmania's 80 years of experience in the planning, construction and management of dams. It includes the investigation, design and construction of 40 ICOLD large dams and over 90 smaller dams.

In addition to our work on the engineering of major dam projects, we are heavily involved in the area of dam safety management and dam surveillance. But it doesn't stop there. Our experience also covers a range of other hydropower and water resource projects, both in Australia and internationally.

Hydro Tasmania Consulting's recent experience includes the two most popular dam types currently being constructed around the world, namely Roller Compacted Concrete Dams and Concrete Faced Rockfill Dams. In the specialised field of the investigation, design and construction of concrete faced rockfill dams, we have established a reputation for international leadership. The internationally accepted modern design and construction methods for these types of dams, which are becoming increasingly preferred for reasons of reliability, economy and speed of construction, were developed and continue to be refined by Hydro Tasmania Consulting. We have investigated, designed and constructed 13 of these dams, from 17 metres up to 122 metres in height and with crest lengths up to 1067 metres. Our understanding of and experience with this type of dam is perhaps unparalleled in the world.

The most recent dam design project undertaken by Hydro Tasmania Consulting is the Burnett Dam, a 50 metre-high Roller Compacted Concrete Dam located in Queensland, Australia.

Hydro Tasmania also has depth of expertise in the investigation, design and construction of other types of dams including:
