Dam safety inspections, monitoring and reviews
As part of the largest owner and operator of dams in Australia, we understand the requirements for effective and efficient dam safety programs. The sudden and massive economic and environmental disruption that can be caused by dam failure means that it is imperative for dam safety issues to be managed as an integral part of the overall stewardship of a dam.
There is growing recognition worldwide that once a dam is conceived it needs to be nurtured right through its lifecycle. This is due to the fact that a dam will usually outlast the people originally responsible for its construction and that design criteria change with time. Through our participation in ICOLD and ANCOLD, and through work we have carried out for the World Bank and other international organisations, Hydro Tasmania Consulting has been influential in forming the recognised requirements of a dam safety program. We have also developed a detailed understanding of both the theory and practice of dam safety management.
Dam safety management is a serious issue; so, too, is our approach. We have operated a specialist Dam Safety Unit within our Dam Design Group since the early 1970s, and have carried out extensive dam surveillance on all of Hydro Tasmania's dams. Hydro Tasmania Consulting has provided dam safety services to many other dam-owning authorities within Australia, including Western Australia Water Corporation, Goulburn-Murray Water, Hobart Water, Cradle Coast Water, South East Queensland Water, SunWater, Snowy Hydro, SA Water and NSW State Water.
The dam safety and surveillance services we offer include:
